A Day in the Life: Peeled Chicago 3 Day Juice Cleanse

August 19, 2012
As you all know, I recently decided to try out a juice cleanse for three days as a way to kind of restart my system. I kept a diary through this process because I know a lot of you are curious about the whole process.
I went with the Peeled Chicago juice cleanse because of price and the locality. These cleanses can be expensive, so do your research and find the one that is right for you. They deliver you six fresh juices per day. Since I did the three-day cleanse, they delivered me eighteen juices at once, plus some great coconut macaroons for an end of the day snack.
As somebody that loves food and is trying to make a career out of food, I will be honest with you; it was hard. But, after going through it, I would definitely do it again and recommend that if you are curious and always wanted to try it, you should give it a go.
So, here we go. Here is my three day cleanse diary. I tried to be as honest as possible.
Day 1
10:20a.m. Green Lantern (romaine, spinach, cucumber, parsley, celery, lemon, ginger, and green apples): Feeling good! Juice has a slight parsley taste to it at first, but with more mixing, you get lemon and cucumber flavors. I got some hot flashes after drinking the juice. Drank some water with lemon in between the next juice.
12:20p.m. Haute Lemonade (cayenne lemonade sweetened with agave nectar and grade A maple syrup): Very lemony! The cayenne has a hot aftertaste. This was probably the hardest for me to drink. I drank some water with lemon in between the next juice. Around 1:00p.m. I got some bad hunger pangs and craving for a snack. I just drank more water.
2:20p.m. Red Line (watermelon juice): This is a red juice that is watermelon based. It was light and fruity. It had a good boost to get me over the mid-day hump.
Note: Do not watch sad movies such as Titanic while doing a juice cleanse. You are emotionally vulnerable and hungry. Don’t put yourself through any more emotional stress.
4:20p.m. Green Lantern: Feeling really full and overwhelmed by all the juice and water.
6:20p.m. Red Line: Felt hungry right before I drank the watermelon juice. The red line gives a great boost. I think this is becoming my favorite juice of the cleanse.
Note: Making dinner for Mike is torture!
8:20p.m. Cashew Milk: So good! Hint of ginger so delicious! Not hungry anymore.
End of the night: Coconut macaroon snack. Very moist and good coconut flavor. It was a welcome relief at the end of the day.
Slept like a baby that night.
Day 2
9:00a.m. Green Line: Not feeling too hot. Woke up with a headache, most likely due to caffeine withdrawal. Stomach is crampy and rumbling.
11:00a.m. Coconut Water: Very nervous to drink this because I’m not a huge fan of coconut water. I drank this and was pleasantly surprised.
1:00p.m. Red Line: Things got moving…I don’t want to go into great detail here but I think you all know what I mean.
Note: This was the hardest day for me. I tried to drink some green tea to give me a little caffeine boost but it didn’t help to make the headache go away. My stomach was kind of crampy all day. By the time I got to the cashew milk and macaroon, I was feeling a lot better. I slept great this night too and started to notice some changes for the better in my skin and nails.
Day 3
I woke and did all the juices as per usual. I didn’t have a headache and felt like a million bucks. I actually did not have any hunger pangs or cravings throughout the day. After doing this for three days, I felt like I could go for three more days.
The day after the cleanse, I ate some of those beautiful grape tomatoes I had been staring at all week and a kale and avocado salad. I also drank a beet, carrot, lemon, apple, and ginger juice. I loved the juice. It was from Peeled and was not a part of the cleanse, but was a great help in coming down off the cleanse.
So, that’s my tale from the past three days of my life. I hope this has helped you all to see what it is like doing a juice cleanse. Clearly, everybody is going to react differently. I was able to relay a few questions to the people at Peeled and they were so helpful and nice enough to answer any questions I had through this process.
Are the juices gluten free? Any known allergens in the juices?
All juices are gluten free and the only known allergen could be the cashews in the cashew milk.
If you have a headache or allergies, should you take over the counter medications while doing the cleanse?
You can take drugs while on the cleanse, but no alcohol or unnecessary prescriptions. Check with your doctor if you are worried.
Would you recommend any solid food snacks if somebody was getting very hungry during the juice cleanse?
If the cleanse is getting tough, we recommend celery and avocado. Be sure to drink plenty of water and green tea for a caffeine and extra cleansing boost.
How often would you recommend doing a cleanse?
We recommend every three months or six months.
What is the best advice you could give to somebody going through a cleanse?
Stay focused, think about a lifestyle infused with juice and unprocessed options, not a quick fix.
I will tell you honestly, as soon as the juice cleanse was over, I was not wanting any cheese or meat. All I wanted was greens and vegetables. Doing a juice cleanse definitely changed my outlook on my diet. I also felt a change in my body, nails, and skin. I would highly recommend Peeled juice cleanses to anybody looking for a cleanse to try.

You go, girl! (Or…You go, Glen Coco!….name that movie….)

All of my non-eating experiences have taught me that I should not be around any other human beings, I get so cranky. So props to you for not killing Mike (and continuing to cook for him!)…that’s some true love right there.

Good for you! I did a 7 day cleanse and I had to supplement with fruit. It was really hard for me as a lot of socializing revolves around food, so I had the opposite conclusion. I probably won’t do a cleanse again unless I had a significant other to do it with me. All the same, it’s amazing how light and airy you feel when doing it!

I agree with the great feeling you get while you are cleansing. I also agree with having a partner in this. It’s hard when one of you in the house is doing this and the other is eating fried chicken in front of you.
