Fall Chopped Salad

October 3, 2012
I am all for trying new things. Granted, maybe 1 out of ten times, those new things end very badly, do not go how you planned, or have you embarrassed out of your mind.
The following story is a true life account about how trying new things can go wrong.
When I was in the 8th grade, I got this crazy idea that I wanted to try and learn karate. Lucky enough for me, I was able to talk my best friend into doing it too. We signed up for a beginner class through the park district, sat back, and waited for the first day of class.
Her mom dropped us off at the first day of class. We walked in and felt like we were in the twilight zone. We stood at the door of the class and gave each other a “What the what!” look. Every other person in the class was under the age of nine!!!
Was this some kind of mistake? Nope, this was the beginner class. The little kids in the class were giving us looks like we definitely did not belong there. Plus, it probably didn’t help that we were both tall for our age. I felt like I was Kramer in the episode of Seinfeld where he learns karate. I certainly did not want to fight children or have them turn on us and jump us after class!!!
We stuck with it for a few weeks, but in the end, that endeavor did not go as we had planned. Lesson learned, maybe we should have signed up for an adult or teen class.
Even though that is one example of how trying something new can go wrong, like I said earlier, 9 times out of ten it ends up better than you thought, like with this salad.
Fall, in every bite, all chopped up and nicely arranged just for you!

That karate story is too funny. Back during the ’96 Olympics (I was 12 at the time) I became obsessed with the gymnastics team, and BEGGED my mom to let me take lessons. She refused, because she knew I’d be stuck in a beginner class with all little kids!

I love this salad – add blue cheese and bacon to anything, and I will eat it!
