Peach BBQ Sauce

July 18, 2012
Have you ever thought, “I’m too old for this?” While in some circumstances, I totally understand the sentiment behind this statement, I don’t feel like it is a good life motto.
This thinking can hold you back from certain fun experiences in life.
For example, a few weeks ago I went to an indoor waterpark with my nieces. The first thought that went through my head was, “I am too old for waterparks.” It was muggy inside and kids were everywhere. I had awoken that morning thinking I would be sitting poolside all day with a cocktail in one hand and a good book in the other. Clearly, those are two different types of days.
It wasn’t until my 4 year old niece, Kate, asked me to take her down the waterslide in which my attitude and outlook shifted.
While torpedoing down the waterslide and screaming at the top of my lungs, I thought that you are never too old to have this much fun! Plus, I would have never heard my niece yell out “Ahhhhh! I hate this part!!!” every time we went through this corkscrew part of the slide.
Just this past weekend we had a block party and during the course of the day/night my husband and his friends busted out a good old fashioned game of beer pong. My first thought was, “College is over. Aren’t we a little old for this?”
I played a game and then went about playing hostess. Later in the night I came out to see my eighty year old neighbors playing beer pong against my husband’s friends. Talk about a shift in thinking!
They were pretty good shots and they just looked like they were having such a fun time experiencing something new.
After thinking back on these moments, I want to know, when did this shift in thinking happen? When did we start caring so much about what other people think and expect of us based upon what age we are?
Remember when you were little and, if you liked something, you would shout it from the rooftops and not think twice about it? I used to eat mashed carrots like nobody’s business. Granted, most of them would end up on my face rather than in my mouth. I used to enjoy tons and tons of peaches each summer and just let the juice run down my arms and mouth. Nobody thought twice about the way I looked; all they paid attention to was the huge grin I had on my face.
This summer, let’s return to the time before we started thinking so much, and just do what we love. Let’s all go down waterslides, let’s play silly games with our friends, and let’s eat tons of peaches and just let the juice run down our arms.
Well, if you don’t want to be that messy and sticky, at least enjoy peaches with a little bit of restraint in this peach bbq sauce.
Ingredients (Makes about 2 Cups Worth)
2 Peaches
½ Cup Shallot, minced
3 Cloves Garlic, minced
1/3 Cup Canola Oil
6 Ounces Tomato Paste
4 Ounces Cider Vinegar
¼ Cup Molasses
1 Tablespoon Ketchup
1 Tablespoon Worcestershire
1 Teaspoon Tabasco
¼ Teaspoon Cayenne Pepper
¼ Teaspoon Red Pepper Flakes
½ Teaspoon Cumin
1 Teaspoon Salt
½ Teaspoon Pepper
Bring a small saucepan, about ½ full with water, to a simmer. Score the bottoms of the peaches. Place the peaches into the simmering water. After about two minutes of blanching, remove the peaches, and place them on a small plate to cool.
While the peaches cool, heat the canola oil in a large skillet over medium/low heat. Add the minced shallot to the pan.
Peel the peaches and remove the pit. Give the peaches a rough chop and then add them to the pan with the shallot. Sautee for two minutes and then add the garlic. Sautee for another two minutes.
Add all the remaining ingredients, stir to combine thoroughly, and then cover with a lid. Simmer the sauce for twenty minutes over low heat.
After twenty minutes, let the sauce cool completely and then add it to a blender. Puree the sauce for about two minutes until smooth. Try the sauce over some grilled chicken breasts and pork chops or over some baked chicken wings.
Sauce lasts for one to two weeks under refrigeration in an air tight container.

I believe the expression too old has lost any value. Why? The calendar says I’m 37, but my wife says I still act like I’m 2…

There’s just some things you never outgrow or get too old for. Except short shorts, those are bad news as you get old. This sauce however is good news. So pretty and looks so perfect.
