Spicy Balsamic Ketchup

April 13, 2021

This easy, spicy balsamic ketchup is made from a few pantry ingredients and is the way to take plain ketchup to the next level. Made from a balsamic glaze, Calabrian chilies, garlic, and ketchup.

Ok, ok. I know what you’re going to say.

“Stef, were you not aware of a current ketchup shortage?”

No. At first. I was not.

Now I am and I have a few homemade ketchup recipes to use as a base for this recipe.

Homemade ketchup recipes:

Skinnytaste Homemade Ketchup (made with tomato paste)

The Pioneer Woman Homemade Ketchup (made with canned diced tomatoes)

Boulder Locavore (made with fresh tomatoes)

Now that we have that out of the way, let’s get into the ketchup!

Here in the Chicagoland area, ketchup is a bit controversial.

Never have ketchup on a hot dog.

What are you a toddler?

Some people say that. Not me of course.

Give me a good French fry or tot and be sure to pass along the ketchup.

That’s more my jam.

Oo! Ketchup or this burger sauce on all the things!

I usually buy the sugar free ketchup, name brand or generic. Doesn’t matter.

I made spicy balsamic ketchup because I wanted to give my beer-battered fries a fancy friend.

The recipe starts with making your own balsamic glaze.

Now before you are like wait, that’s too much work, you can always substitute pre-made balsamic glaze.

Then just fast forward to mixing the grated garlic, Calabrian chilies, and ketchup together.

The spicy, balsamic ketchup has a bite and kick from the garlic and chilies.

Then the sweetness from the balsamic glaze comes in to smooth everything down.

It is so tasty!

This is like fancy adult ketchup.

Plop it on a burger. Dunk your tots freely.

Grill up some bratwurst and dip it right in!

No judgment here!

Ketchup, especially this one, is ok in my book!

Spicy Balsamic Ketchup

Yield: Makes about 3/4 -1 cup dip
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 20 minutes

Balsamic glaze, garlic, spicy Calabrian chili infused ketchup that is perfect for any burger, hot dog, fry, or tot!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 1 garlic clove, grated
  • 1/2-1 tsp chopped Calabrian chilies (or hot sauce of choice)
  • 3/4 cup sugar-free ketchup
  • small pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Add the balsamic vinegar to a small pot. Bring to a boil over medium/low heat. Once the balsamic reduces by half, add the honey and garlic. Mix to combine. Remove from heat. Transfer to a small heatproof bowl/measuring cup. Place in the freezer and let cool for 5 minutes.
  2. Once the balsamic glaze is cooled, mix about 1-2 tbsp of glaze with the ketchup, chilies/hot sauce, and salt in a small mixing bowl.
  3. Transfer to a vessel with a lid. Chill in the fridge until ready to serve.

Notes

You can skip making your own glaze and use bottled balsamic glaze to save time. Ignore the vinegar and honey. Just skip step one. Mix all the ingredients together in a small bowl.
